About Kouros

Kouros Bartel has developed a deep and lasting connection with Alaska and its history, from an early interest in the state landscapes and communities grew a broader fascination with its cultural heritage, archaeological record, and historical development. His work is centered on understanding Alaska through the places, people, traditions, and events that have shaped it over time

Since 2023, he has devoted much of his time to researching and sharing the history of Alaska, his interest extends from archaeology and Indigenous cultural heritage to the Russian period, territorial history, and the many lesser known stories connected to communities across the state, through research, documentation, and historical sources, his work seeks to bring greater attention to parts of Alaska past that are often overlooked, the aim is to present these histories with care and context while encouraging a deeper appreciation of the cultural heritage that continues to shape Alaska today

Alaska holds a central place in his work because of the extraordinary depth of its history and cultural heritage, his research explores the many layers of the past, from ancient archaeological sites and Indigenous traditions to the periods of Russian America, American territorial development, and statehood, rather than focusing only on the best-known events, he is particularly interested in the stories, places, and historical details that receive less attention, his work is driven by a desire to preserve these narratives, examine them through reliable historical evidence, and make them accessible to a wider audience
