About Kouros

I am Kouros Bartel, originally from Paris but now fully immersed in the beauty of Juneau, Alaska. Married and the proud father of a wonderful daughter named Alyeska, my heart has found a deep and abiding love for this extraordinary place. From the vibrant city life of Paris to the majestic wilderness of Alaska, my journey has been profoundly transformative. I am continually inspired by the stunning landscapes, rich cultures, and resilient spirit of Alaska. This remarkable state has captured my soul and made me feel truly at home in a way I never imagined possible.

Since 2024, I have had the honor and privilege of serving as Alaska’s historian, specializing in the rich history of our state. Each day, I draw upon my extensive knowledge and research to shed light on Alaska’s unique cultural heritage and historical significance. In my role, I am dedicated to advancing our understanding of Alaska's past, preserving its historical sites, and promoting educational initiatives that highlight our diverse heritage. By collaborating with fellow scholars, local communities, and cultural organizations, I work to ensure that Alaska's history is accurately represented and valued. My mission is to safeguard and celebrate our historical legacy while contributing to a greater appreciation of Alaska’s role in the broader historical context. This endeavor is one I approach with deep passion and commitment, striving to enrich both our state’s cultural narrative and our collective historical knowledge.

Alaska holds a special place in my heart, as it is both my home and yours. Since assuming the role of Alaska's lead historian in 2024, I’ve been privileged to witness the dedication and resilience of Alaskans firsthand. Together, we have made significant strides in uncovering and preserving the rich tapestry of our state’s past, from documenting our ancient cultural sites to advancing new research that illuminates Alaska's historical significance. Our efforts have not only enriched our understanding of Alaska’s heritage but also fostered innovative approaches to preserving our historical treasures. We’ve worked tirelessly to address the challenges of safeguarding our archaeological sites and promoting educational initiatives that highlight our state’s unique history. Alaska has always demonstrated its strength by coming together to face challenges, and our recent achievements are a testament to this enduring spirit.

I am deeply honored to serve in this role, and I am grateful for your continued support as we continue to explore, preserve, and celebrate Alaska’s rich history. Our mission is ongoing, and it’s crucial that we remain committed with passion and determination. I look forward to further advocating for our historical legacy and advancing our shared goals in the years ahead.
